Say hello to Red Fred! He is an Eastern Indigo Snake on loan from Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation. Eastern Indigoes are native to Florida, but their population on Sanibel has died out. As a threatened species, SCCF is working to reintroduce this beautiful snake through their breeding program!
Eastern Indigoes are the longest snake native to the United States – Fred measures in at 6’6″. They are opportunistic hunters with a varied diet, though their preferred meal is other snakes. Eastern Indigoes make use of Gopher Tortoise burrows to hunt, nest, and breed. You may see Fred burrowing through his substrate and creating tunnels in his enclosure.
