Wallace is one of our Eastern Screech Owls (22-2591)! He was admitted in May of 2022 as a nestling. Wallace sustained unknown damage to the head that resulted in permanent trauma. Without appropriate mentation (similar to behavior), CROW cannot release Wallace into the wild.
Eastern Screech Owls are generally found in wooded areas. Their feathers can range from grey to reddish, which helps them blend in with tree trunks! They can be mistaken as juvenile Great Horned Owls due to their small size (10″ in height) and prominent ear tufts.
Fun Fact: Eastern Screech owls are masters of disguise! When camouflaging to hunt or hide, owls squint to hide their bright yellow irises.
