CROW Feathers: Kelsey Moffett, Veterinary Student Extern
Where are you from?
I am originally from Indiana.
What’s your position at CROW and how long are you here for?
I am a Veterinary Student Extern here at CROW for one month.
What is your favorite part of your internship? Favorite role in the hospital?
Being able to release an American Kestrel back into the wild was my favorite experience while here at CROW! My favorite role would probably be participating in patient intakes and learning about all the native species of Florida.
What is your favorite animal and why?
This is a very difficult question to answer, but I would have to say the Royal Terns are my favorite animal I’ve worked with here. I love the pattern of feathers on their head, and I love that they are small but feisty once they start to feel better!
What is your most memorable CROW moment so far?
My most memorable moment was when a pelican was having a bath to help keep his feathers waterproofed… He ended up deciding he was done with his bath early and climbed out to take a stroll down the hall!
What activities or hobbies do you enjoy outside of CROW?
I love going to the gym and going on runs, and Sanibel island was perfect for these hobbies! I also enjoy playing video games and exploring Florida.
What has been the most surprising thing during your time as an intern?
I was surprised to learn about how different all our avian patients are. While they may all be birds, they all have their own special needs and considerations when it comes to their medical care and rehabilitation.
What are some of your goals or aspirations for the future?
I hope to one day work as an exotics veterinarian, treating pet birds, reptiles, and exotic mammals!
