CROW Feather: Rianne Dekker

Where are you from?

“I’m from Zierikzee, a small town in the Netherlands. I moved to Utrecht to go to vet school.”

What is your position at CROW?

“Veterinary Medical Externship student.”

How long have you worked at CROW?

“I just completed my 4 week externship.”

What is your favorite animal and why?

“Birds are my favorite animals to work with, especially pigeons/doves. Since working at CROW, I also have a fascination for pelicans. They are beautiful birds with a very interesting anatomy.”

What is your most memorable CROW moment?

“My most memorable moment was doing surgery on an injured mourning dove, with the CROW veterinary staff. I was very excited to work with the dove, we don’t see these in the Netherlands. Working with pelicans was also special to me. The adult brown pelican stood out the most, I think they are incredibly beautiful!”

What activities or hobbies do you enjoy outside of CROW?

“On my days off during the externship, I loved walking the Ding Darling trails. I will really miss watching all the birds and reptiles there.”

What are some of your goals or aspirations for the future?

“I would like to specialize in avian medicine. Hopefully, I can keep working with many different bird species, I enjoy working with wild birds and with pet birds!”
