CROW Feather: Hannah McCarthy
Where are you from?
“Bangor, Maine”
What is your position at CROW?
“Veterinary Medicine Externship student.”
How long have you worked at CROW?
“I was a student for 5 week”
What is your favorite animal and why?
“The Eastern Screech Owl because while they are so small, they have such a big personality! It helps that they are very cute with their asymmetrical feather tufts by their ears.”
What is your favorite memory or story from your time at CROW?
“My favorite memory at CROW must be working with our younger Virginia Opossums outside. While I had to battle the ants to help clean their cages in the morning, seeing all their personalities was worth it. Especially when they went from ‘playing opossum’ to competing on who could climb down their branch fastest to get to the food. It was always a great way to start the day!”
What activities or hobbies do you enjoy outside of CROW?
“Outside of CROW, some of my hobbies include reading, baking, or scuba diving. Throughout the year, I try to read at least 200 books and I often make it to 250! For scuba diving, my more recent trip allowed me to view an underwater archaeological site off the coast of Italy as well as to experience some of their local marine life.”
What are some of your goals or aspirations for the future?
“Looking toward the future, I’m hoping to find a way to continue wildlife medicine. Before CROW, I knew I wanted the challenge of working in either exotics or zoo medicine, but now I have such a passion for wildlife care and conservation. Being able to see so many species within the same day is such a treat and it’s even better when the care you provide results in an animal being released back into the wild. When I return to Scotland, I can’t wait to dig into the wildlife in the UK and who knows, maybe I’ll even find the ever-illusive Loch Ness Monster!”
