CROW Feather: Akamai Wong
Where are you from?
“I am originally from the Bay Area, California, but now live in London, UK to attend veterinary school at the Royal Veterinary College.”
What is your position at CROW?
“I am a veterinary extern at CROW.”
How long have you worked at CROW?
“I just finished my four week externship at CROW.”
What is your favorite animal and why?
“My favourite animal is the sea otter because of their playful nature, curiosity, and resourcefulness. I always loved going to see the sea otters at the Monterey Bay Aquarium growing up and have occasionally spotted some otters off the coast of California as well.”
What is your favorite memory or story from your time at CROW?
“My most memorable CROW moment was when the vets were doing an endoscope procedure on a laughing gull that came in with bilaterally drooping wings. It was amazing to see the unique perspective of the internal organs that the scope provided. The vets gave me the chance to try maneuvering the scope around as well, which was an unforgettable experience! The endoscope procedure confirmed the suspected diagnosis of aspergillosis, as we were able to see the unique white plagues in the air sacs that indicate aspergillosis.”
What activities or hobbies do you enjoy outside of CROW?
“One of my favourite things to do is to watch the sunset and sunrise, and on my days off on Sanibel I was able to go to the beach and watch the sunsets. Sanibel has some of the best sunsets I have seen! Outside of Sanibel, I like to play the piano and enjoy reading fiction novels in my free time.”
What are some of your goals or aspirations for the future?
“My future aspiration is to become a veterinarian. I have been enjoying the opportunity to extern at different veterinary hospitals during breaks from school to decide what type of veterinarian I want to be in the future. During my time in vet school I also hope to contribute to research to help expand the knowledge of the veterinary field.”
